# Why does the long-distance design use phones?

Heyou’s long-distance architecture links each ring to a phone over Bluetooth, then uses a network path between the phones. The phone bridges the ring and the distant person.

## Separate nearby links from remote delivery
Bluetooth concerns the ring and a nearby phone. Internet connectivity concerns the path between the two people. They have different conditions, so “the ring is connected” is not a complete description of the whole route.

## Consider both ends
An action at the sending end still depends on suitable conditions at the receiving phone and ring. Final app permissions, background requirements, and status indicators will need their own instructions.

## Keep a phone in the route
The current long-distance design uses a nearby phone and internet at each end. Consider this connection requirement when deciding how Heyou would fit into your day.
